School of Gerontology and Long-Term Care

Purpose

The population structure change of the global population of elderly people continues to increase and the birth rate continues to decline, coupled with the advancement of medical technology, the average life expectancy of human beings is extended, and the problems of the elderly have attracted worldwide attention, making elderly care the mainstream of the future medical care market. As Taiwan is facing the impact of declining birthrates due to the aging population, elderly care-related industries will become prominent in the future. Therefore, it is even more urgent to cultivate professional talents for the elderly.

The department was originally named the Department of Nursing and Management for the Elderly. It has been renamed the Department of Health and Long-term Care for the Elderly since the 111 academic year. It is the first higher education department related to the elderly in the country. It aims to cultivate senior health and long-term care professionals with professional knowledge and skills, humanistic and artistic literacy, service enthusiasm, international outlook and innovative adaptability.

With the clarification of relevant policies for the elderly and the increasingly vigorous development of the elderly industry, the department has been renamed the “Department of Health Management for the Elderly” since the 2012 academic year. With the name change, the positioning has been adjusted to “serve the healthy elderly, emphasizing health promotion and the development of the elderly industry.” In the 2010 academic year, the master’s class of the Department of Health Management for the Elderly was created, actively cooperating with aging-related institutions and industries, strengthening the employment competitiveness of students, and guiding students to enter relevant institutions and industries for employment. From the 111 academic year, it was renamed “Aging Health and Long-term “Department of Nursing” to highlight the professional attributes and characteristics of long-term care that integrates the health promotion of the elderly and includes a wider range of disabilities and dementia. It is expected to train students to become “cross-field, creative, and industry-oriented professional”.
